How to Read With Your Dog

Read With Your Dog puts your dog at the center of the story. Familiar words, everyday experiences, reassuring rhythms, and illustrations using colors dogs can see are brought together in this new collection of books specifically written for dogs to hear.

These aren't children's books about dogs.

They are books written for dogs.

Anyone can be the reader. Children, seniors, and the dog lovers of any age can pick up a book and share a story with a dog they love.

Curl up on the couch, read at bedtime, before you leave the house, or during a quiet afternoon. Your dog will recognize familiar words, respond to your voice, or simply settle in and listen.

Because this time, your dog is the audience.

Five books. Five familiar parts of life with your dog. One new way to experience them together.

MEET THE WHOLE PACK

From coming home for the first time to walks, goodbyes, thunderstorms, and growing older, each Read With Your Dog book turns a familiar part of life with a dog into a story meant to be shared together.

  • PICK A STORY

    Familiar words. Familiar moments

Choose a book inspired by something your dog already knows—home, walks, time apart, loud noises, or quieter days.

  • GET COMFORTABLE

    Shared time together.

Sit somewhere familiar, settle in, and give your dog a few quiet minutes of your attention. Reading together can become another small moment of comfort, calm, and connection.

  • READ ALOUD

Your voice is the part they know best.

Your dog doesn’t need to understand every word to know something important is happening. They know your voice. They know when you’re beside them. And they know when they have your attention.

Read With Your Dog books are designed around familiar words, routines, tone, and connection—turning everyday moments into stories you can share together.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Jennifer Shanley is the founder, author, and illustrator of Read With Your Dog and its inaugural five-book collection.

The idea began while Jennifer was sitting beside her own dog during a long illness, searching for the right words to comfort him. It made her think about how much our dogs understand through our voices, familiar language, tone, and repetition—and sparked a simple question:

What if there were books written specifically for dogs to hear?

Read With Your Dog grew from that question, bringing together Jennifer’s lifelong connection with dogs and her curiosity about the quiet conversations that happen every day between dogs and their people.
